Protection Relays – The Intelligence Behind Medium-Voltage Switchgear

What Is a Protection Relay?

A protection relay is an intelligent electronic device (IED) that continuously measures key electrical parameters such as current and voltage.
When it detects an abnormal condition — such as:

  • Overcurrent (short circuits or overloads)
  • 🌍 Earth faults (insulation failures)
  • ↔️ Directional faults (power flowing the wrong way)

…the relay instantly sends a trip command to the vacuum circuit breaker (VCB) inside the switchgear.
This isolates the faulty section, protecting equipment and ensuring supply continuity to the rest of the network.

Why Protection Relays Matter

Without proper relay coordination, even a small fault could cascade through the system, causing equipment damage, safety risks, and outages.
Modern grids rely on relays not only for fault protection but also for data collection and communication, forming the foundation of today’s digital substations and smart grids.

Full Flexibility: Compatible with Any Relay Brand

Every utility and project has its own preferred protection philosophy and relay supplier.
That’s why Nuventura’s SF₆-free primary GIS is engineered for full interoperability.

Our switchgear can integrate seamlessly with any major relay manufacturer, including:

  • Siemens
  • ABB
  • Schneider Electric
  • SEL
  • And many others

This open compatibility ensures that customers can maintain existing standards while upgrading to environmentally friendly dry-air insulation technology.

Customizable LV Compartments

To make integration effortless, Nuventura offers highly customizable low-voltage (LV) compartments, designed for:

  • Flexible relay mounting options (flush or modular)
  • Optimized wiring layouts
  • Configurable communication interfaces (IEC 61850, Modbus, etc.)

Whether the project requires a traditional protection setup or a fully digital relay scheme, our design adapts — not the other way around.

Ready for Today and Tomorrow

Our SF₆-free GIS is not only climate-friendly but also digitally ready.
With the ability to host IoT sensors, remote operation modules, and intelligent relays, it supports utilities in their journey toward more automated, transparent, and resilient networks.

Smarter, Safer, and Sustainable

At Nuventura, we believe that moving to SF₆-free switchgear shouldn’t come with compromises.
Our approach combines the intelligence of modern protection systems, the flexibility of open relay integration, and the sustainability of dry-air insulation — delivering a solution that’s ready for the future of grid protection.

Explanation of the relay protection functions required in MV grids

Every part of an electrical grid must be protected from faults such as short circuits, overloads, or insulation breakdowns. Protection relays act as the grid’s nervous system — constantly monitoring electrical signals and commanding circuit breakers to isolate faults before they cause widespread outages or damage. This article gives an overview of the key protection functions.

AIS vs GIS — Combining the Best of Both Worlds with SF₆-Free Technology

For decades, utilities and industries have relied on two main types of medium-voltage (MV) switchgear: Air-Insulated Switchgear (AIS)and Gas-Insulated Switchgear (GIS). Each technology offers unique advantages — and trade-offs. At Nuventura, we believe the future doesn’t belong exclusively to one or the other. It lies in combining the strengths of both, enabled by our SF₆-free dry-air insulation technology.

Why Voltage Levels Matter in Medium-Voltage Grids

In medium-voltage (MV) power distribution, voltage level defines everything — from how efficiently electricity travels through the grid, to how equipment is designed, rated, and operated.

Protection Relays – The Intelligence Behind Medium-Voltage Switchgear

In every medium-voltage (MV) primary substation, protection and control systems play a crucial role in ensuring grid safety and reliability. While circuit breakers and disconnectors handle the flow of electrical power, it’s the protection relays that act as the system’s intelligence — constantly monitoring, analysing, and responding to the grid’s behaviour.
