Nuventura joins Lucy Electric to accelerate global adoption of SF₆-free primary switchgear

Nuventura GmbH, a pioneer in SF₆-free medium-voltage switchgear, today announced that it has joined Lucy Electric, following parent company Lucy Group’s acquisition of 100% of its shares.

Since its founding in 2017, Nuventura has been at the forefront of developing sustainable alternatives to SF₆-based switchgear. The company introduced the world’s first 36 kV dry-air Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS), followed by a 24 kV solution, enabling utilities and industrial users to adopt environmentally friendly technology without compromising on performance, footprint, or reliability.

This milestone marks a significant step in scaling the adoption of SF₆-free primary switchgear at a time when the industry is undergoing rapid transformation. With the EU F-gas regulation banning SF₆ in new medium-voltage switchgear from 2026 (up to 24 kV) and extending to higher voltages by 2030, demand for proven, compliant alternatives is accelerating across Europe and beyond.

By joining Lucy Electric, Nuventura gains access to a strong global footprint, established customer relationships, and industrial scale — enabling faster deployment of its technology across utilities, renewable energy projects, and industrial applications worldwide.

Nuventura’s patented dry-air GIS technology is specifically engineered for SF₆-free operation, including an optimized circuit breaker and three-position disconnector design. The system delivers the key advantages of conventional GIS — compactness, safety, and low maintenance — while eliminating the environmental impact associated with fluorinated gases.

Manjunath Ramesh, Managing Director & Chief Technology Officer of Nuventura, said:
“The switchgear market is undergoing the most fundamental technology shift for decades. Becoming part of Lucy Electric marks the next chapter in our growth and will enable us to scale up and offer a broader range of high-quality, environmentally friendly solutions to suit a host of industry applications across the globe.”

John Griffiths, Lucy Electric CEO, added:
“I’m pleased to share that we’ve completed the acquisition of Nuventura GmbH in Germany, a highly innovative business specializing in SF₆-free switchgear for the electric energy sector. This enables market entry into the primary switchgear space and doing so with technology that directly supports the transition to cleaner, lower-carbon power networks.”

The combined offering will strengthen the position of both companies in supporting the energy transition, addressing the key drivers of decentralization, decarbonization, and digitalization shaping modern power systems.

Environmental Advantages and Potential Carbon Credits to SF6-free Switchgear in the Indian Context

SF₆ remains widely used in MV switchgear — but with a global warming potential ~24,300× higher than CO₂ and a 3,000-year lifetime, even small leaks create major long-term emissions. In this paper, Amol Patharkar, Cassidy Kuiper, Probal Sarkar, and Lucas Zaehringer highlight the case for SF₆-free (dry-air) switchgear. Using India as an example, they estimate ~160 t of SF₆ already installed in MV networks, equal to ~3.9 million tCO₂e — with emissions set to rise alongside grid expansion if conventional GIS persists. SF₆-free alternatives can eliminate these direct emissions while offering comparable performance — and may even unlock carbon-credit and ESG value as carbon markets evolve.

Explanation of the relay protection functions required in MV grids

Every part of an electrical grid must be protected from faults such as short circuits, overloads, or insulation breakdowns. Protection relays act as the grid’s nervous system — constantly monitoring electrical signals and commanding circuit breakers to isolate faults before they cause widespread outages or damage. This article gives an overview of the key protection functions.

AIS vs GIS — Combining the Best of Both Worlds with SF₆-Free Technology

For decades, utilities and industries have relied on two main types of medium-voltage (MV) switchgear: Air-Insulated Switchgear (AIS)and Gas-Insulated Switchgear (GIS). Each technology offers unique advantages — and trade-offs. At Nuventura, we believe the future doesn’t belong exclusively to one or the other. It lies in combining the strengths of both, enabled by our SF₆-free dry-air insulation technology.
